Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned saw the light of the day on August 11th, 2004 and had a big success, even though the reception was rather lukewarm. In the early 2000s the athmosphere in the band was quite tense, so Liam decided that he wanted to produce the album single-handedly: neither Maxim nor Flint partook in the production. Howlett later admitted that the process had been very slow and at times he had had very little motivation to continue. Despite not having his bandmates on board, Liam invited many artists to collaborate.

As far as the production goes, Liam made use of various software instruments and synths. For instance, Howlett switched from Cubase to Propellerhead’s Reason. In one of the interviews, Liam claimed that it had been this DAW that helped him to get himself together. Programmed beats, software synths and guitars recorded in the studio – not much room for sampling. Still, Liam used some.
