Jaguar Skills x The Prodigy

Last Friday 26th January at 6.30pm UK time, Jaguar Skills unexpectedly dropped a 27 minute mixtape entitled The Sword Fight, consisting of The Prodigy tunes mixed with original beats and samples. It came out really funky – we dedicate today’s article to this airing, with some details from Jaguar Skills.

Without any prior announcement, the social media accounts of both Jaguar Skills and The Prodigy revealed on Friday morning that a certain fresh mixtape would be premiering on BBC Radio 6 the following evening. The posts were light on details and fans of both artists had no idea what to expect. It turned out that, to the surprise of literally everyone, The Prodigy are going back to their old-school cut-up mix roots this year! Don’t let it confuse you that the main creator of the mix is Jaguar Skills, we dug up that Liam Howlett’s participation is also present. And it looks like a good alternative to the much-promised second volume of Dirtchamber Session.

In the best traditions of ‘Dirtchamber’, Jaguar Skills smashed over 70 tracks, samples, beats and pieces into his mix in less than half an hour. As well as the band’s own original tracks, the mixtape includes a host of landmark references to their endless inspiration, from Ennio Morricone to Flavor Flav. A decent amount of work! The mix was approved by Liam Howlett himself: the BBC Radio 6 broadcast includes his welcoming words at the beginning and a warm farewell at the end. And not only that!

This is Liam H, The Prodigy, and you’re listening to ‘Cloudbusting’ on 6 Music. This is a mix Jaguar Skills put together with some of our biggest tunes, so turn it up and bare witness to the ‘Sword Fight’ Prodigy mixtape. Enjoy.

The All Souvenirs team managed to find out that, despite the modest airplay and lack of promo, the mixtape has been in the works since 2022 and has had at least 3 different edits of varying lengths!

Jaguar Skill for All Souvenirs: “I made it in 2022 when I was on tour with The Prodigy. The original is 70 minutes, and like 70 more tunes. But it was edited down by Liam to 40 mins, then I jumped on it again to make it 27.”

According to Jaguar Skills, it took 3 weeks to make the 70 minutes version back in 2022. Then, after leaving it for 2 years, this short one was made just a few weeks ago, already in 2024. “Because it’s quite old, I can listen to the mix almost as if it’s made by someone else! So like you, I’ve had this shit on repeat!”, he says.

Since the day of the premiere, the fans has been trying to figure out the exact track listing every now and then, but who but us is able to do it without any clues. Check out the most complete list of the tunes used in the mixtape below.

By the way, it’s quite symbolic that the Jaguar Skills mixtape was aired this year, as many will remember that this February marks the 25th anniversary of the only official mixtape Liam Howlett ever released himself! The aforementioned Dirtchamber came out on 22nd February 1999 via XL Recordings: we’ll devote a separate article to this release next month, but in the meantime you can read our lengthy feature on Howlett’s appearance at Mary Ann Hobbs’ Breezeblock show in October 1998. This mix, recorded over several weeks, was the precursor to Dirtchamber.
